Adam is called the first man as Christ is called the second man and the last Adam. In this Adam is designated as one of the only two representative men in the world and as such he is the head of his respective family. “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven” (1 Cor. 15:45-47).
The consequences of Adam’s sin are attributed to the entire human race. In Adam all the human race died, through his offence death reigned over them, in his judgment condemnation came upon all, and in his disobedience they were all accounted and charged as sinners. “. . . through the offence of one many be dead; . . . the judgment was by one to condemnation; . . . by one man's offence death reigned by one; . . . by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; . . .by one man's disobedience many were made sinners” (Ro 5:15-19)
