“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” 2 Cor. 9:7. This text teaches us to give to the Lord’s work. Because of its tangibility, the use financial resources can be a measure of one’s willingness to surrender all of self to God (Lu 16:10-11, Mt 6:19-21).
First, giving is a matter of the heart, “as he purposeth in his heart”. Giving is an expression of thankfulness for wealth in the riches of Christ’s grace redemption, forgiveness, mercy, kindness, and glory (Eph 1:7, 2:4, 2:7; Philip 4:9; II Cor 8:9).
Secondly, giving financially is to be purposed, budgeted, or scheduled as God hath financially prospered, “as he purposeth in his heart” (I Cor 16:2).
Thirdly, all are to give, “Every man according as he purposeth” (I Cor 16:2).
Fourthly, God is pleased with those who cheerfully give, “God loveth a cheerful giver” (Heb 13:16).
