Scripture Study for the week of  January 29th, 2006

“And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother” (2 Thes. 3:14-15). Church discipline is a biblical mandate. This passage relates that it must be exercised with great prudence. More . . .

First, this instruction is given because a church may be too lenient and not discipline according to scripture. The concern of this error is that the whole church may become carnal (I Cor 5:6,8).

Secondly, this instruction is given because the church may be too severe and not properly desire the restoration of the one ensnared (I Cor 5:4-5).

Finally, we can be sure this instruction is given so that the lives of the body of believers covenanted together as a church bring glory to their Savior (I Cor 5:7).
