“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). This passage declares that those who mourn are blessed by the comfort that God has prepared for them. Those who mourn for sin find this promise especially applicable in the comfort of Christ’s redemption because . . .
Convicted sinners find in themselves no relief from the wretchedness of their heart, the slippage of their tongue, the ungratefulness of their feelings, the unholiness of their motives, or their ill kept resolutions to do better. Mourning souls find in their Savior, however, the Lord’s promised comfort “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified” (Isaiah 61:3).
