Scripture Study for the week of  February 26th, 2006

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). What is the meaning of this text? It is usually thought that the mighty or strong shall make great gain. The answer is found in an understanding of meekness. Meek does not mean weak, rather . . .

Meekness is humility expressed in submission. The meek are those who see themselves as they really are, and because of this recognition they bow to God’s absolute wisdom and goodness. Moses was meek above all the men who were upon the face of the earth (Numbers 12:3). When Moses attempted to deliver the nation of Israel out of bondage by slaying a man in his own strength he was sent to the backside of the desert (Ex 2:11-15). Forty years later when the Lord called him in the burning bush Moses was meek (Ex 3:11-12). Meekness is a condition of mind and heart that possesses gentleness in power, godliness in strength of character. The meek, being in the center of God’s will and enjoying the blessedness of His presence, inherit the best this earth has to offer.
