Scripture Study for the week of December 4th, 2006

Struggling with life? Weary with responsibility? Is the rat race getting you down? Do I hear a groan from deep within your soul? This world is not the home of God’s children. “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven” (II Cor 5:1-2). More . . .

Dear child of grace, we are strangers to this world, we are pilgrims on this earth (Hebrews 11:13), and if we look for complete deliverance in this world we are most miserable (I Cor 15:19). The hymn truthfully records:

Earth holds no treasures but perish with using, however precious they be,
Yet there’s a country to which I am going, heaven holds all to me.
Heaven hold all to me, brighter its glory will be,
Joy without measure will be my treasure, heaven holds all to me.

I do not minimize your struggle my friend; even Solomon who had it all said life was a vexation. Struggle on though, for our hope is bright, and we persevere in the present drudgery by the anticipation of our coming heavenly deliverance (Ro 8:22-25). Remember, “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Ro 8:18). We do not escape this life by dreaming of heaven, but we can endure this life because of the certainty of heaven. There is our rest, there is our satisfaction, and there is total fulfillment.
